An intervertebral disc is the spongy shock absorbing tissue between the bones in your spine.
What is commonly known as a 'slipped disc' is more accurately described as a herniated or prolapsed disc, when the central tissue for the disc (the nucleus) breaks through the outer casing of the disc (the annulus) causing herniation.
This can cause the following symptoms:
- Back Pain or neck pain.
- Sciatica or arm pain.
- Tingling, pins and needles or numbness.
- Difficulty walking, sitting and/or sleeping.
What Causes a Herniated Disc?
Trauma
Injury to a disc in the spine is often caused by trauma, commonly in the form of heavy lifting. The force of lifting a heavy object can cause damage to the outer casing of the disc, resulting in a sudden shape change, also known as a bulging or slipped disc.
Degeneration
Degeneration or wear and tear can happen in the spine as we get older, particularly in people with manual jobs. This causes the discs in our spine to thin and dehydrate, making them more vulnerable to injury from normal everyday movements, bending or lifting.
Genetics
There is some evidence to suggest that you can inherit a predisposition to develop back pain. You may be more likely to suffer a disc injury if your parents or siblings have also experienced a disc injury.
The Herniated Disc Program
Here at Turramurra Sports And Spinal Physiotherapy we have helped 1000's of patients just like you with our 3 Step Herniated Disc Program
Step 1 - Remove Your Pain
Every disc injury is different. Some patients will have sciatica or leg pain making walking very difficult, some patients will only have back pain. Your treatment will be tailored to your specific circumstances and diagnosis.
Treatment often involves:
- Soft and deep tissue techniques to address tension and/or shortening or spasm your lower back or neck muscles.
- Mobilisation techniques to improve your quality and range of movement, to gently start to get you moving again.
Step 2 -Latest Technology for Herniated Disc Treatment
Shockwave therapy is a targeted and effective treatment approach to many types of chronic back pain.
Shockwave therapy is delivered non-invasively through the skin and is often indicated in those whose injury have not responded to other forms of treatment.
Turramurra Sports & Spinal Physiotherapy invested in Shockwave therapy to provide the latest treatment technology for their patients with chronic back pain and disc degeneration.
Step 3 - Recovery
Whether your goal is to be able to:
- Lift your children again
- Get back to work
- Get back to the gym or sport
- Sleep through the night
Our 3rd step is vital to make sure that you have the strength in the muscles around the neck or lower back and pelvis, to get back to doing the things you love without pain or restriction.

Shockwave therapy is also known as as radial pressure shockwave therapy. It is a newly available treatment for the management of pain caused by various musculoskeletal disorders and injuries.
A shock wave is an intense, short energy wave that moves faster than the speed of sound. This energy wave is used to target painful areas in musculo-skeletal tissues. The energy accelerates the healing process by switching on the body’s own healing mechanisms.
These healing mechanisms have often been interrupted when the body gets into a an inflammatory cycle such as in cases of chronic back pain.
